[Straits Times] His heart was with the ordinary man

A CHANCE meeting I had with Mr Lee Kuan Yew more than 30 years ago - when he was still Prime Minister - while walking around a neighbourhood in Clementi, left an indelible impression on me.

He was clad in a casual, short-sleeved shirt like an ordinary man in the street and talking in a friendly and unassuming manner to some people around him, totally without any airs.

The then Prime Minister himself was in our neighbourhood and there was no fanfare at all. He could easily have been missed.

His heart was indeed with the ordinary man; I thought so then and I have never doubted it since.

E-learning specialist S. Gunasegaran recalled that when Mr Lee spoke to him when the former was cleaning the Singapore River in his teens, Mr Lee "did not speak like a prime minister, he spoke like a father" ("Like a father"; Tuesday)

This remark certainly resonates with me.

I hope all Singaporeans honour the spirit of our founding father, and strive for his ideals to keep Singapore successful and exceptional for many years to come.
