[Straits Times] Let students be inspired by Mr Lee

I AGREE with Mr Ho Kong Loon that there are many things we need to salute former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew for ("Salute to titan who turned island into First World nation"; Monday).

Most of all, we must learn from him and remember the lessons he tried to teach us all his life.

Mr Lee always placed great importance on developing new and capable leaders for the country. Hence, this week of national mourning is a great opportunity for schools to ensure that our younger generation remembers these lessons and this great man.

I suggest that schools allocate time to play videos or audio recordings of Mr Lee's key speeches throughout the week, paying particular attention to the video of Mr Lee breaking down while announcing Singapore's separation from Malaysia.

Teachers should then explain the context of each clip to the children. These will be impactful lessons, much better than any social studies textbook.

Students will then be able to better remember this difficult moment in our history and learn not to take things for granted, as our country's success did not come easily.

The older students should also be given time to listen to Mr Lee's speeches, which may then inspire them to do great work for the country in the future.
