Life-savers for all schools

WE THANK Mr Simon Khoo Kim San for his feedback ("Vital life-saver for all schools"; Wednesday).

The safety of our students, teachers and all in the schools is important to us. We are in the process of equipping all government and government-aided schools with automated external defibrillators.

This will be completed by April, and familiarisation sessions will be organised for school staff on the use of these devices.

Ban alcohol sales in petrol stations

NOW that tougher laws on the sale and drinking of alcohol are in the works, the Government should also consider banning the sale of such drinks at petrol stations ("Bill seeks to curb public drinking late at night"; Tuesday).

It is inappropriate for these outlets to sell intoxicating beverages because drinking and driving do not mix. It defeats the purpose of the authorities' advice to motorists not to drink and drive.

Petrol stations should not make it so convenient for drivers to buy alcoholic drinks. After all, what is there to prevent a thirsty motorist from buying a can of cold beer on a hot day, and taking a swig from it while he is on the road?

Door-closing timer for trains

ON SOME MRT trains, there are LED panels that display useful information such as the next station the train is stopping at. This is helpful for people who are hard of hearing, so they can prepare to alight at their destinations.

How about installing a simple countdown display when train doors are about to close? Although there is a beeping sound, this serves no purpose for deaf people.
