WE THANK Mr Edwin Feng for his feedback ("Query on police response"; Tuesday).
Three police officers were patrolling along Paterson Road on Jan 15 when they came across a couple who had skidded from their motorcycle owing to an oil spill. They stopped to help the couple, who said they did not require any medical assistance.
Our officers advised the truck driver, who was trying to clean up the oil spill, to place additional cones to divert traffic away from the truck and the affected lanes. The officers then left the scene after assessing that no further assistance was needed.
Subsequently, the police received other calls for assistance, which later led to the closure of Paterson Road to facilitate the clean-up and repair works by the authorities.
Public safety on the roads is our priority. We agree with Mr Feng that the officers had erred in their assessment of the situation. They should have done more to manage the incident at the scene. The Singapore Police Force takes a very serious view of this and we will be looking further into the matter.
We commend the couple who stayed behind to help warn other motorists of the oil spill, preventing further accidents.
