I HAVE had the privilege of meeting Mr Lee Kuan Yew up close on various occasions, as he was the MP for Tanjong Pagar, where I grew up.
He was a powerful and effective communicator. This attribute was vastly manifested in his election campaign speeches.
When he won victory after victory, he travelled on a vehicle to deliver his thanks to the electorate through a loud speaker. His sincerity couldn't be missed.
I received scholarships from him a few times, and his firm handshakes made a strong impression on a very young me.
Under Mr Lee's leadership, a sound framework of governing was laid down, which gave rise to many major policies.
He also took a never-before- seen approach to the transition of power, and was greatly successful. Indeed, his approach has resulted in our country's current situation and excellent government.
The nation owes him much. Declaring him the Father of Singapore is the least we can do to express our deep gratitude.
