[Straits Times] Budget wish list: Help small businesses

THE Budget statement will be delivered soon ("Singapore's Budget to be delivered on Feb 23"; Jan 8).

As our economy is still weak and experiencing a tight labour market, many analysts predict that the Government will increase assistance and support to businesses as well as relax some measures on hiring foreign manpower to ease the labour crunch.

As a business owner myself - I own a small food shop - I really hope the Government will provide more support and assistance to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the form of rebates and tax cuts.

The Government should also impose a cap on the rental price and fees that landlords can charge their SME tenants.

Any long process of applying for grants and assistance schemes should also be reduced, to eliminate any unnecessary waiting time. The procedures should also be simplified.

Lastly, the Government should continue to provide assistance and rebates to the low and middle-income citizens, especially in areas such as health care, education and childcare fees.
