[Straits Times] Crack down on illegally modified bicycles

MANY of us will agree that illegally modified bicycles are becoming more prevalent here in Singapore ("Ex-motorbikers turn to e-bicycles, some illegally modified"; last Saturday).

Many owners of these bicycles have been seen riding on pedestrian walkways, subjecting pedestrians, such as the elderly and children, to the risk of accidents.

Electric bicycles are not permitted on pavements, and their maximum allowed speed is 25kmh. Still, many electric bicycle users have flouted those rules.

It would seem that enforcement is lax and the chance of getting caught is slim. This scenario encourages the blossoming of such illegal bicycles.

The time has come to increase enforcement in order to reverse the trend.

The authorities should come down hard not only on bicycle owners but on the suppliers and workshops too.

It does not make sense to allow workshops to illegally modify bicycles and suppliers to bring them in, and then say it is the users who are responsible for them.
