WE THANK Mr Aaron Ang Chin Guan for highlighting his thoughts and observations about the prices of food in hawker centres ("Maintain ingredients of traditional hawker centre"; Monday).
One of the key interests of NTUC Foodfare is to help moderate food prices at hawker centres frequented by many Singaporeans, who are looking for affordable everyday food.
Centres managed by NTUC Foodfare are currently the only ones that are price moderated.
In the case of Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre, NTUC Foodfare officially took over fully on March 1, thus, none of the stalls was subjected to any price increase review when they reopened at the newly built centre last November.
The prices established by the incumbent stallholders, as well as the food types sold at the hawker centre, are inherited and will be managed henceforth by NTUC Foodfare.
Since our takeover, all stalls have submitted their full price list for the items sold.
In moderating price increases in the future, all stalls will have to submit their requests and considerations for the increase.
NTUC Foodfare will review the reasonableness of the increase, including making comparisons with other centres and current market conditions.
While keeping the Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre vibrant, our aim is to ensure the food remains largely affordable for the residents.
With a newly built hawker centre, like the upcoming Bukit Panjang Hawker Centre to be managed by NTUC Foodfare, the food types and prices will
be better managed through the selection criteria of stalls during their application process. These would include prices of food sold, quality and variety.
These policies introduced are aimed at attracting and nurturing privately owned stalls to serve good food at affordable prices.
We understand the importance of planning the food mix.
Mr Ang will be glad to know that traditional hawker favourites and speciality food are being planned in the food mix for Bukit Panjang Hawker Centre and will have a presence there (though subject to the interest of future hawkers tendering at the centre) for residents and foodies alike to enjoy.
