[Straits Times] New childcare scheme opens doors for more kids

THE partner operator (POP) scheme is a great way to provide benefits to both pre-schoolers and their parents, and pave the way for a better pre-school education system in Singapore ("More pre-schools with lower fees in the pipeline"; last Saturday).

By having childcare centres lower their fees and cap them at about $800 a month for full-day childcare, pre-school fees will become much more affordable for parents.

It is not compulsory for children to attend pre-school in Singapore.

However, with the lower fees, I hope that more parents, especially those from lower-income families, will be encouraged to enrol their children in pre-school.

This will allow more children to enjoy the benefits of pre-school.

It has been proven that pre-schools play a crucial part in a child's holistic development, as it gives children the chance to learn many new skills, such as effective communication.

Raising the overall quality of pre-school education through a new legal framework means that pre-schools will have better teachers and teaching methods, and thus, a better education system for pre-schoolers.

Because of this, a child undergoing this programme will be able to develop more holistically, learn more skills and become a better individual.

I hope that with the new partner operator scheme, more parents will enrol their children in pre-school and allow their children to experience the joy of learning at a young age.
