[Straits Times] Take firm action against creators of hoax website

I HOPE the authorities will take firm action against those who set up the website announcing falsely that former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew had died, as it was clearly done with malicious intent ("Rising concern over Mr Lee's worsening condition"; yesterday).

Love him or hate him, there is no denying that Singapore would not be what it is today if not for Mr Lee and his team of first-generation leaders. Under his leadership, they stood up during a period of turmoil to do what they felt was best for Singapore.

The Singapore Story could have turned out very differently. Some people may disagree with Mr Lee's policies, but many have benefited from them. He is the man who put Singapore - a tiny red dot without natural resources or a large hinterland - on the international map, and made it the envy of many countries.

Whether or not one agrees with his tough stance on security, there is no doubt that it has kept Singapore peaceful and safe.

As we celebrate 50 years of nation building, the least we can do is pray for his speedy recovery, or that he will go peacefully, knowing that his work here is done and that he has built a nation that is strong, free and prosperous.
