This is an auspicious year for Singapore as it reaches a milestone. Our economic success, social harmony and political stability would not have been possible without the hard work and can-do spirit of people from all walks of life.
Together, we have built a strong nation, together, we must celebrate with joy, and an additional public holiday on Aug 7 was declared to enable more people to mark Singapore’s 50th birthday.
Alas, travelling abroad to chill out takes priority for some people. (“Celebrate long National Day weekend in Singapore, urges Halimah”; March 16)
We can have a long break some other time and not necessarily during our Golden Jubilee weekend from Aug 7 to 10. It is not every year that we have a national celebration of such magnitude.
It would be a shame to miss all the activities lined up for this historic chapter of our nation.
