[Straits Times] Get to the root of what shoppers want

IT SEEMS that there is a glut of shopping malls ("New mall in prime location, but no shoppers"; Monday).
Shopping malls have sprung up rapidly in recent years in every nook and corner of our small city-state, resulting in there being too many of them.
There is also a lack of uniqueness to them, as practically all the malls have the same tenant mix: foodcourts, bookshops, telcos, and department stores dealing in apparel and sporting merchandise.
It does not help that there are shops that have sales or promotions of sorts every weekend, which can cause shopping fatigue.
Mall managers should be more innovative to increase shopper traffic; they must not regard visitors as being interested in only buying and dining.
There are others who have a desire to attend arts exhibitions, dance performances and healthcare talks.
Perhaps property owners and developers could conduct a survey on shoppers' pet peeves, and most importantly, if there is a glut of shopping malls.
Such feedback will be beneficial to all stakeholders, whether they are mall owners, tenants or shoppers.
