[Straits Times] Help motorists with traffic-light timers

IT IS excellent that the Government is upgrading its hardware to install digital cameras to catch speedsters and red-light busters ("Beware: Digital speed traps ahead"; last Friday).

However, as a motorist, I wonder if more could be done.

In a neighbouring country, I see digital timers installed at road intersections, indicating how long the green light will stay green and how long one needs to wait when the lights are red.

This simple indicator allows the motorist to know when to start slowing down on a green light and allows him to more efficiently use his time when waiting on a red light.

Many motorists have unintentionally run the red light when they overestimated how long it would take for the lights to turn red, from green or amber.

The presence of these timers will help reduce the anxiety of motorists at traffic junctions and reduce the number of unintentional offenders.
