[Straits Times] Create environment in which those with disabilities can thrive

I WAS moved by the article about Mr Hitesh Ramchandani ("Student with cerebral palsy launches book"; April 18).
He could run 2.4km in less than 11 minutes, despite having cerebral palsy.
I was not able to achieve this when I was his age, despite not having the condition.
It shows his sheer determination, as well as his great family support.
It also shows that in every adversity, there is opportunity.
We know that we can help people who have cerebral palsy make the most of their abilities and physical strength, and improve their quality of life.
We need to treat them fairly and shower them with love and care, so that they can develop self-confidence.
It is important that parents of a child with cerebral palsy understand their child's needs and aspirations.
It is imperative for us to provide the best environment for such individuals.
We need to have a long-term plan, and strive to provide them with the right resources, support, inspiration and compassion.
The Government has been providing such individuals with assistance in many ways.
I urge it to look much deeper into these areas and see how it can further lend a hand.
