[Straits Times] Knowledge must be wielded with responsibility

I CONCUR with Mr Leo Hee Khian that we need to draw a clear line between supporting any person and supporting any ideal ("Distinguishing between helping gays and supporting an agenda"; yesterday).
Every human being deserves to be treated with respect and basic human rights. However, not every idea deserves acceptance, and ideas that are harmful to society ought to be rejected and never absorbed.
Knowledge is power and our universities are where great knowledge is planted into the minds of our nation's future decision-makers. It is terrifying to behold an image of a man with all that power in his mind yet devoid of a heart, of a conscience.
Our university students must exercise such power with responsibility, and not wield their knowledge without regard for the community they belong in, for we share an obligation to contribute positively to the well-being of our society.
And this responsibility means careful and civil discussion, as well as planning and scrutinising any idea before accepting or rejecting it.
I hope our universities will be a breeding ground for healthy ideals and individuals, for the destiny of our nation is in their hands.
