I refer to the report, “Mindset change among employers the key to workers’ push to upgrade: Lim Swee Say” (May 6, online).
While I thank the Government for the SkillsFuture initiative, which encourages workers to upgrade, I feel that the public sector, being the biggest employer, must change its mindset first.
I am 56 years old, and having a PSB Academy diploma and the Certified Productivity and Innovation Manager qualification under the Workforce Skills Qualifications framework, I applied numerous times to government agencies for a job, only to receive no reply.
The job openings indicated that having a polytechnic diploma was an entry requirement.
If government agencies and ministries recognise only qualifications from the Education Ministry’s institutions, then one should not expect private companies to recognise the Workforce Development Agency’s Continuing Education and Training qualifications.
