I read with disgust and anger that a 49-year-old man with children of his own could not show any understanding, let alone empathy, towards Amos Yee (“Father of 3 who slapped Amos Yee gets 3 weeks’ jail”; May 12).
Neo Gim Huah’s rationale for taking the law into his own hands, like only hooligans would, was out of place. Amos was in the process of being dealt with in a court of law, and fairly, we were confident.
Neo must have faith in our legal system. I am unsure, however, whether his calculated but senseless act was prompted by the bully that may be in him.
Small in frame, Amos cuts a figure of frailty — easy meat for Neo to showcase his cowardice. I wonder if he would have done the same if Amos were big and burly. I wonder if he would whack his children with such force and brutality. I could feel the pain of Amos’ parents and the rest of us with children of our own.
I am sure the punishment meted out to Neo is deterrent enough for him to want to repent.
