In the commentary “A frosty peace beckons for the US, China” (May 8), the writer mentioned: “Washington is giving up on the idea that a risen China can be co-opted as a stakeholder in the present global order.”
Reading between the lines, it means that the United States gave up on expecting China to continue playing the role of a little brother on a world stage dictated by the US.
No reasonable individual or organisation would accept a lesser role when he or it is fit for a larger one. To be realistic, the US should accept its biggest creditor, China, as an equal partner on the world stage.
It was the unfair treatment of China in the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, et cetera, that led to the emergence of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.
The earlier the US swallows its pride and wakes up to reality, the better for Asia and the world.
